each city on the move :
1. Urbanisation and growth
2. Poverty and social inequalities
3. Social diversity and citizenship
4. Urban sustainability and disaster management
5. Planning and local governance
6. Planner’s values and attitudes
As
we knew that Yogyakarta was the center of education, culture, tourism, etc. It
has been a long process so people from all provinces come to this special
province and couldn’t escaped urbanization and growth. The second one, powerty
and social inequalities still happened in the face of the city. ‘The message is that rising inequality is dangerous. It’s bad
for growth and it’s bad for governance. We see a concentration of wealth
capturing power and leaving ordinary people voiceless and their interests
uncared for’ (Winnie
Byanyima, Exec Dir. Oxfam International, Guardian, 19 January 2015). Yogyakarta also known as the small of Indonesia
because it has social diversity in many aspects such as religion, culture,
ethnics, etc.

Climate change a major challenge: water
shortage, floods, natural disasters. Urban
resilience as a key and necessary ‘capability’. For planning and local
governance, we need Integrative
and engaging planning processes with different groups: civil society, public
and private sectors. Develop
a set of values/sensitivities (respect, social equity, integration, social
justice, compassion, generosity). And the
last but not least, was about Planner’s values and attitudes.
“The concept of the
just city embodies a revived recognition of the need to formulate social values
explicitly” (Fainstein, 2001:
885).

If
related to the current conditions, the cities in Indonesia are experiencing a
‘threat’ in this case of climate change challenge. In his presentation, Dr.
Sonia Roitman also delivers research activities in Yogyakarta, which is currently
examining the condition that ‘sold’ to the direction of commercialization such
as business, hospitality, and services. We called “Jogja Asat” or drying in
Jogja which the presence of water usage was not balance by the business or
hotel, triggering droughts and other environmental issues. Still from
Yogyakarta, she expressed her admiration for the DIY society that become
example in disaster preparedness in 2010 on the eruption of Merapi. Yogyakarta recovery
process was rapidly, the public has the spirit to clean up immediately and
continue their work.

The
important challenges facing several cities in Indonesia and the Global South is
the availability of public services in order to support sustainable
development. It needs a convenient public service as an integrated mass
transportation so that the government can reduce the consumption of private
vehicles such as motorcycles to reduce emissions of harmful gases that cause
pollution. This project will not be realized without the awareness and
cooperation of the public, government, and the private sectors. At the end of
the lecture, the Argentine-born lecturer also tells her research experience in
the field of land access, housing policies and development planning for some
countries such as Uganda, Argentina, Germany, Finland, Spain, United Kingdom,
and Indonesia. “This is my first time to visit Indonesia, especially in
Yogyakarta and thank you,” said Dr. Sonia Roitman lectures ended the session
with the committee of the Student Association of Geography Education.

Thank you Mrs. Sonia with your motivation and inspiration for us. Again,
I got a strong motivation to open my eyes that we have a big challenge
towards Indonesian in the future as well as we can start a small action
to adapt the global trend. Dare to be smart citizen and think about
future life. Thank you Allah, all students, and lecturers. Now we can
improve a part of urban geography studies as my specific concentration. Kind Regards, Janu Muhammad.
